In 2024 Emma celebrated her 25th anniversary in the electronics industry.
Having graduated in 1999 with a BEng in Materials Engineering from
Coventry University, Emma went straight into working in a process and materials
laboratory for an automotive tier-1 electronics manufacturer in the UK. Over the course of nearly seven years, Emma
got to appreciate the challenges of safety critical volume manufacturing and
spent extensive periods in Japan and the US relocating /introducing new product.
In 2006 Emma relocated in the UK and found
herself working for UL, providing safety certification for the PCB, laminate,
and coating industry. During her twelve
years with UL, Emma took on responsibility for the European and Latin America
regions and was recognised as a UL Distinguished Member of Technical
Staff. She also became more and more
involved in the writing of standards for the industry at both IPC and IEC,
along with contributions to the UL safety standards.
After a short period as CTO for Gen3
Systems, Emma decided to strike out on her own and formed Emma Hudson Technical
Consultancy with the aim of helping the industry to navigate the standards maze
and has been doing this since 2020.
Emma has recently stepped down as the
convenor of IEC TC 91/WG 2 Requirements for Electronic Assemblies and is in
the process of stepping down as the chair of the UK national committee that
mirrors IEC TC 91 – Electronics Assembly Technology, and ISO TC 44/ SC 12 –
Soldering Materials.
Emma also currently holds the following
positions:
- Board member and treasurer of the EIPC (European Institute for the PCB Community)
- Technical director for the UK’s Institute of Circuit Technology
- Chair of the board of trustees for the UK’s only dedicated electrical safety charity, Electrical Safety First
- Non-Executive director of Certsure, a company that assess, certify and educate in energy-related sectors
- A member of the UL technical committee for UL 796, UL 796F, UL 746E, and UL 746F, representing the EIPC.
In her spare time(!) Emma helps her husband
to run his motorcycle training business.
