The June issue of SMT007 Magazine focuses on sustainability and includes an article by INEMI Project Manager Mark Schaffer entitled “INEMI Develops Tools for Sustainable Electronics.” This article profiles two INEMI tools that can help reduce the environmental impact of information and communications technology (ICT) products — the Reuse and Recycling Metrics and the Eco-Impact Estimator tools. 

• INEMI's Reuse & Recycling Metrics tool provides a predictive metric that helps product designers, recyclers and refurbishers understand how their choices in design and materials affect the end-of-life performance of their products and identify ways to improve the final outcome.  
• The Eco-Impact Estimator tool offers a simpler approach to life cycle analysis (LCA) that provides a means to more quickly and easily evaluate product concepts and optimize design trade-offs. The tool focuses specifically on ICT products and uses simplified techniques and algorithms for estimating global warming potential (GWP) in terms of carbon dioxide equivalents.
